Unfortunately, I was halfway done before I thought to take any pictures. Typical, I know. Anyway, here goes. When you first walk into the barn on the left are my two current kidding pens.
Next to them is the old rabbit pen. This was a 10'x20' space that was lined with chain link so the rabbits couldn't dig out of it. I raised my rabbits in a modified colony setting, worked well for me. Anyway, I pulled up the chainlink and split the area in half. You can kind of see that in the two pics below. They are looking at the pen from both ends.
Down at the end, past the rabbit pen are two nursery pens for birds.
I wanted to split the rabbit pen in half. Half would be my milking/storage room and the other half would be divided into two more pens built in such a way that I could put goats or birds in them.
After removing the chainlink floor, I removed moved the electrical outlets from along the lower board to the top. You can see I already did that in the pics. Then I split the pen in half and finished the milk room part, you can see that part already done.
Next I removed the chain link in front and split the remaining area in half again. Did the same thing I did in all the rest of the pens, metal roofing on the bottom part and chain link on the top. Then built the doors. I really, really suck at building doors but they mostly function at least.
Finished product.
As you can see, this one is already in use.
The other side of the barn is split into two parts, one for the birds and one for the goats. All the pens are made from recycled stuff that we end up with. There was a chain link fence around the yard when we moved here. We took that out and have used the chain link a lot more than I though we would! The wood has come from the porch that was on the old singlewide that was here and various other projects. Some if it is on it's 3rd or 4th project. The corrugated metal was laying around here, too. It's been used for a lot of things! When we built the barn, we bought the metal, the rafters and the poles. Everything else, including the girts, has been reused from something or other.
I'm rather pleased with how things turned out and now I have some very needed pens out of that unused space!
Kat,
ReplyDeleteI am very impressed with your many skills. Is there anything you don't know how to do? You must be busy every minute of the day. Showing photos of your projects in progress is so helpful for those of us
who are not familiar with what you are doing.

Haha! The list of things I cannot do is very, very long! Any real carpenter would just shake his head and roll his eyes at my 'carpentry' but, hey, it works.
