Owls

We have an assortment of owls around here. It can be almost deafening at certain times of the year at dusk and dawn. I see them flying around fairly often at dusk as well. Last night, though, there was one that kept hanging around the house and screeching like a distressed chicken. That sucker kept me up all night.  Stinking bird.

I hear these owls a lot, but they usually don't hang out right here over the house. Doing some research this morning, I think it's a juvenile Great Horned Owl. I know we have several of those around, they are the only owl I can easily identify. My husband has been having issues getting to work in the morning lately because there is often one sitting in the middle of the driveway and it won't move. There's usually one or two up on the power poles as well. I suspect we have a family in residence somewhere close and the young ones are the ones that we are seeing and hearing. It's really kinda cool, but I wish they'd fly somewhere else at night.

  1. I love to hear the owls here in North Carolina. Mostly we hear Barred Owls. They who.who.....whoooo. I told a bird watcher friend that I heard a quacking noise too along with the who..who. His statement was..."Hmmm Quacking owls? Maybe a little too much wine last night?" My reply..."I didn't know that owls drank wine!" Actually the Barred Owl barks.

  2. Too cool! I was somewhat amazed at the range of sounds that an owl can make when I was googling this owl. I know we have Great Horned Owls, and we are supposed to have Eastern Screech Owls, Long Eared Owls and Barred Owls around here. I see owls flying around most nights at dusk, but it's hard to ID an owl in that light as it's flying by. The only ones I've seen by daylight have been the Great Horned Owls.

    1. Thanks! It's just kind of a side hobby that I just decided to start one day, no particular reason. :)

Yeah, some people on HT are very talkative and get lots of likes. I'm not all that active there and don't really have a lot of likes. I'm more of a lurker than a joiner. :)
