We’re a small family homestead in south central Montana just trying to find the simple in ‘simple life’. We’ve been homesteading for more than 20 years so you’d think by now we’d have learned what works and what doesn’t. Yeah, right.

How did we get here?

Well I have sort of done this my whole life. Growing up, we always had a large garden and did lots of canning. We bought eggs from neighbors and sometimes meat as well. When I was 11, I discovered that herbs could be used medicinally and not just for flavoring food. I mean, who knew??!! My little mind was blown!

Then I got into 4H, pigs specifically. Who knew they were such characters?! And that was that. The rest of my life was going to involve animals and plants.

My poor husband had no such history or inclinations and has been dragged along for the ride willy nilly. He doesn’t seem to mind too much, though!

After we got married, we started with meat rabbits, then chickens and it just grew and grew from there. Next thing I knew, we were into dairy goats. This is spite of me insisting that I would NEVER do dairy animals! You know how that goes (insert eyeroll here).

Why do we this?

We do this mostly for quality food for our family. But there’s also economy in there, too. Who can afford to buy meat and dairy products at the store anymore? Some parts of it we enjoy and some we don’t. Some are just necessary.

But I have to say, there’s really nothing like the look on a little one’s face when they get to hold a new chick or a new baby goat. And, there’s nothing like your kid noticing milk in the store for the first time, seeing the cow on the carton and saying in tones of amazed disgust, “People drink milk from COWS?!”

Why Senselessly Random?

Because that’s how I live my life. I’m always chasing the shiny thing to see how it works and what makes it tick. Not much in this life is done logically at our place!

What is this site about?

Simply to show you what what we’re doing. There will be some success, lots of failure (or learning opportunities, depends how you think about it) and lots of stuff the will make you raise your eyebrows and wonder if we were dropped on our heads once too often as children.

So pull up a chair, grab your favorite cup of whatever and let’s see what happens next!
