Yay I got my new sink!

Finally!! I handwash all our dishes, we don't even own a dishwasher. For years I've been working with extremely limited counterspace and a single basin sink. Kind of a pain in the butt for handwashing. I love those old style farm sinks. Really, really love them. My ideal would be one of those old apron front double basin sinks, especially the ones with two deep basins. Next would be a 2-3 faucet trough style sink. I don't know if it would be as practical, but they are so cool looking! I think I could make them work just fine in the kitchen.

Unfortunately, those suckers are expensive!!! So, I've been keeping an eye out locally, just in case. In the 5 years I've lived here, I've never actually seen anything like this for sale. Then this sink came up. It's a double basin, double drainboard enamel over pressed steel sink. It may not be my dream sink, but it's still cool and I could definitely use two basins again! However, it was out of my price range. I watched it and watched it and it finally came down into my price range. Score!!! Ironically, at the same time there an apron fronted, cast iron single basin, single drainboard sink for sale as well. But the whole point of this was to end up with 2 basins, so............ This is what I ended up with.

Ta-da!

This sink has a weird faucet setup. Didn't discover this til after we bought it, but a normal faucet won't fit.

We had to special order this one. It's kinda weird, and kinda ugly. Almost so ugly, it's cool. Make any sense? :) Works awesome, though, which is what matters.

This thing is in amazing condition! There are only 3 small chips in the porcelain and none are actually in the basins. What are the odds of that?!

Predictably, after picking this up, 3 more of this type of sink showed up for sale. Nothing for years and then a rush of them. That's ok, those were cast iron and while that has more 'cool' appeal, I think the steel will be a bit easier on my dishes. It's definitely a lot easier on our bodies whilst moving it!

My eventual kitchen is going to end up being an interesting combination of the 50's and the late 1800's/early 1900's. A 1950's cookstove, this sink and a hoosier cabinet. I have no built in cabinetry and I like it. What would that style be, eclectic?

I am going to go play in my sink now.

  1. Congratulations! I know that must be a great relief to you to have comfortable working conditions in the kitchen. After all......we spend so much time in that area....it should be, at least, as up-to-date as the best workshop.....all the better to cook yummy meals for your loved ones.

    1. Thanks! I'm just loving this thing! To be able to do dishes normally, to be able to have a spot to put dirty stuff or meat or what have you, it's great!
