Natural fruit soda

There are sooo many different types of fermented drinks. There are just plain fermenting, using a ginger bug, a scoby (kombucha), water kefir grains, milk kefir grains, and there are probably many more that I don't know of. We've tried all those but the only one we drink enough to bother keeping is the milk kefir. However, milk kefir grains are rather versatile!
We very rarely have fruit juice in the house, too expensive usually. I do occasionally have homemade fruit juices, apple, elderberry, rhubarb, etc. I do have weakness for cranberry juice so we do have that every so often when they come on sale. Since it's not an all the time thing, when we want fruit 'soda', we use kefir grains. I take a milk kefir grain and throw in a bottle of juice, sweetened to taste if necessary, and let it set on the counter for a few days. We taste test every day to see if it's where we like it. The kefir grains won't last forever in fruit juice, but, so far, I can put them back in the milk when I'm done with them and they seem to do fine. They do take on the color of the juice, though, which looks kind of funny when I put it back in the milk. Here's a quart of apple juice I found in the back of the cupboard. Made some good apple soda! Now we are waiting impatiently for the rhubarb!

You can see the kefir grain there at the bottom of the jar.

Just an idea if you want some naturally fermented 'soda' for the kids, or yourself, but don't really want to go to much effort. :)
