While I had a better year than last, it wasn't my best either. I got a lot of beets, some onions, quite a few peppers and a very good pumpkin harvest. Oh, and lettuce this spring was very gung ho! I had tons of that stuff!
I grew three different types of pumpkins,
Kakai Hulless (which did the best), Winter Luxury (a pie type) and Connecticut Field. I also tried to grow a white variety but only ended up with one very small pumpkin from those. Youngest also grew a giant variety for a jack o lantern. Her plant did very well and she is sooo pleased with herself. :)
The Kakai Hulless are a variety that is mostly grown for the seeds, which are .....wait for it.........hulless! They have big, dark greenish seeds that are plentiful and tasty. They have a rather interesting pattern on the outside, too. Their flesh isn't all that spectacular but I dry it and use in soups and such in the winter.
The Winter Luxury are a first try this year. I normally grow Little Sugar pumpkins for pies and eating but I wanted to try something different. Don't know why, I really like the Sugars. They did fairly well. Six pumpkins off of one plant.
The Connecticut Field are something I grow for carving and animal food. I only ended up with one plant this year and 4 pumpkins though. It'll be more of a treat than a supplement for the animals this year.
Here's all my pumpkins in the wheelbarrow. Isn't the little white one cute? I hope it has good flavor because it's too small to mess with carving or anything.
The orange ones with the white 'webbing' are the Winter Luxury. The orange ones with green sort of stripes are the Kakai Hulless. They are also most of the green ones. The green ones will be set out in the sun for a bit to see if they'll finish ripening. If not, they'll be dried for future use.
And, last but not least, youngest child's monster pumpkin.
