Harvest

I love harvest time! It's a lot of work, but very rewarding. Today I went out and picked all of the corn. We grew Painted Mountain corn this year, it's more of a flour corn than a sweet corn. Although, we did eat some of it at the milk stage and it wasn't that bad. Not as sweet as most sweet corn, but it had a wonderful 'corn' flavor to it. The ears were kinda small, but that was ok. Now it's all dried so I picked it and pulled the plants to feed to the goats. Happy goats!!

This is my basket that I traded a rug for. Isn't it purty?

Painted Mountain corn is multicolored. There are some very pretty cobs in that bunch. There's even a couple that are marbled looking.

The downside is the wasps this year! They hole up in the plants to overnight and I go out while it's still cool and they're still in the plants. I got stung twice this morning.

I even managed a few pinto beans this year. For some reason, I have a heck of time with those. I didn't really get enough to do much with, but I was still pleased as it's the best I've done so far.

I also got one pie pumpkin picked. There are several others that are almost, but not quite, ready to pick. If even half the green ones make it to ripening before it frosts, I will have a LOT of pumpkins! Yeah!!!! We love those things.

Although I didn't get pics, yesterday I got a big basket full of beets and carrots as well. We've also been getting a fair number of tomatoes. One of the varieties we tried this year was Dakota Gold. While everybody likes it, it only stays good on the counter for a couple days. Does anyone else grow this variety and, if so, do you have this problem? I can't ever quite get enough to do anything with and any one time. The kids eat them like candy, though, so that's something.

So how's your harvest going this year?
