I have a Great Pyrenees mix, Bear (I know, how original). Where we used to live it was only on 8 acres but we had issues with mountain lion and bear, not to mention coyotes, on the property. I was really never comfortable letting the kids play outside, even in the yard so we acquired Bear. His job is to watch over the kids. He is very good at his job but he doesn't think that that is quite enough so he also watches over the acreage that we have now. He doesn't go in the pastures but he can see pretty much everything from up here by the house and he lets me know when anything comes up.
My goats are all used to the dogs through the fence but don't like them when there is no fence between them. They have been know to beat the snot out of a dog on occasion. Anyway, to the observation. The goats can be way off at the far edge of the pasture doing their thing but if Bear sounds the alarm, they ALL come running back to the barn/sheds by the house. Once they get here, they check to see where he is looking and they'll all stare off in that direction, too. It's really kind of hysterical to watch, but also amazing. They picked this up all by their little lonesomes. How? I don't know but it sure is something!
